One thing I’ve always remembered about my primary school was my CCA -Chinese Orchestra.

throughout the 6 years then we’ve studied in 3 campuses – my batch mates will know this, ^^
remember “campus2”, the first, run-down campus? Though its now converted into a student’s hostel (im against it, no offence), I am thankful that it isnt demolished or whatever. At least its a physical part of my memory. we’ve had CO camps in that shabby place, but I loved the feeling. Afterall, I completed P1 & 2 there lol.

I can remember the chalkboard and the dust and the curly-haired teacher banging the blackboard making screeching noises. Familiar recess bell through the PA system then some eye massage thingy (i duno, the school insisted that its good then), but before that is a mad rush to the playground or having a nice bowl of laksa. We’re all supposed to pick a CCA. The first instrument I touched was an Erhu, but then I lacked talent in it (anyone can tell that from the noise my instrument produces) so I wanted to transfer to another.

Then we progressed through the years. P3 was afternoon lessons in “campus1”. (School policy, P3&5 lesson time 1-6pm, it being a necessity due to lack of space to hold all students). Always rushed homework in the morning before school starts. And its usually PE at the end of the day. Glorious evening lol. Usually its soccer or hula hoop or relays. I think its during this year that Nanyang CO got to go to Genting Highlands for some performance.

P6. New campus lol. We moved in halfway through P5 (year 2003). Before that we’re all getting excited about the campus and sometimes when the construction workers forget to close the metal door boliao kids like us can peek through.

Now Nanyang has got a CO room specially reserved for the orchestra and there’s lots of new facilities, and the kids are really the privileged lot.  The above are my memories and no matter how I share them, they can never be part of anyone else (vice versa). I guess its still up to us seniors (at least to the kids) to create memorable events for the kids so that they enjoy their days in Nanyang. And maybe blog about it years later and pass it on.

I really appreciate the strong alumni system in Nanyang as well as in HCJC. Maybe its because I want to stay in contact with others after we graduate. Like for example, last year, CO ex-members, including those already working/married, came to our annual potluck dinner during the CO Camp. and talked crap. but at least their still in touch.

Surfed the web recently and found a Hwachong unofficial website. Lots of posts from ex-pupils even though they graduated 20 years ago. simple but meaningful. talked about their experiences/ ghost stories/ lessons of their days in HC. I think this should be the way.

Whenever it rained in the old campus the drains will be flooded. So we used to pluck leaves and shape them into little boats then put them into the rushing waters and maybe compete with each other’s boats to see whose will reach the end first. Ok, sounds lame and why did i enjoy doing that last time? Seriously I don’t know.

But then I feel that people these days don’t look at the surroundings and enjoy the beauty in nature. And also to find joy in doing even the most stupid things, no matter now insignificant they are.

Here’s wishing everyone happy holidays.
